Our mission

To create a supportive and inclusive media space where people with lived experience of mental health and disability can share their voices, stories and talents. Through radio, TV, podcasting and publishing, we inspire connection, challenge stigma and build opportunities for community-led storytelling, creativity and growth.

Our vision

A vibrant, empowered community where every voice is heard, every story matters, and media becomes a tool for hope, belonging and change.

Our story

How IPL Radio began.

Welcome to IPL Radio, a Perth based community radio station dedicated to promoting positive health and wellbeing.

IPL started in 2020, during the outbreak of COVID, when a group of like-minded people got together to form a radio station that shared evidence based information with a positive slant.

Trys Reddick, founding director of IPL Radio, has been an accredited Mental Health First Aid instructor since 2015, but found he was unable to keep training once lockdowns began. He wanted a way to talk about mental health that was lockdown proof, and the concept of IPL Radio was born.

IPL Radio has worked with organisations including the Cities of Kwinana, Rockingham, Fremantle, Mandurah and Belmont, as well as the Australia Day Council, Commonwealth Bank and Volunteering WA.

To many, IPL is a safe space where people can be themselves without fear of judgement, grow in confidence and skills, and inspire others to follow the dream.

Trys’ story

From recluse to founder.

Trys left school at 14, following a diagnosis of agoraphobia and OCD at 12. Dropping out of school proved to be bad for his mental health and he became a recluse for 10 years. A chance visit to Australia to see elderly relatives became a turning point in his fight with mental health issues and gave him the sense of purpose he needed. Back in the UK, he decided he wanted to emigrate to Australia and began a five year journey of recovery.

In 2007 he returned to Australia on a student visa, studying a Diploma in Community Work, and on completion landed work in employment services.

In 2015 he became an accredited MHFA instructor and in 2016 set up Passionate Lives Pty Ltd. In 2017 and 2018 he secured grants and worked with the Cities of Kwinana, Gosnells, Armadale and Cockburn, with further grants from WAPHA and Connect Groups. He has run courses for Woodside, Alcoa, Constable Care and Youthcare.

Alliance Against Depression

In 2017 Trys helped set up the Kwinana Alliance Against Depression, an initiative that started in Germany and was brought over as a trial by the WA Primary Health Alliance. The Alliance used a four pillar approach to reducing suicidal behaviour: a media campaign, mental health training, support groups for people at risk and GP training.

The launch at Darius Wells brought together 80 mental health professionals, survivors and carers to workshop how the Alliance could move forward. In 2018 Trys helped set up the Rockingham Alliance, and more than 100 people came to the launch at the Ocean Clipper Inn, sharing lived experience and stories of suicide loss. Alliances have since flourished in Fremantle, Kalamunda, Busselton and Belmont.

Songs of Hope

In 2019 Passionate Lives funded the Songs of Hope CD, bringing together 10 singer songwriters with lived experience of mental health issues to record an album, with a bonus collaboration track. The album is called Shine Again.
